Shapewear has one sizing rule that overrides instinct: buy your measured size, never smaller. The sculpting comes from the garment's power fabric, engineered to compress at your true size; going down a size does not add shaping, it relocates tissue to wherever the garment ends. Enter your measurements and pick a compression level below.

Waist and hip decide shapewear size exactly as with underwear, and the between-sizes answer is always the larger one.

Choosing the compression level honestly

Light smoothing evens fabric lines under everyday clothes and you can forget you are wearing it. Medium compression genuinely smooths a silhouette under fitted clothing and stays comfortable through a workday. Firm sculpting visibly changes a line under occasionwear, and it is occasion-duration wear: a few hours, not a routine. Choosing firm for daily wear is how shapewear gets its miserable reputation.

Construction to look for at any level: waistbands with silicone grips rather than tight elastic (anti-roll), gusset closures for practicality, and sized garments (S through 4X by measurement) over one-size stretch, which compresses unevenly across bodies.

Frequently asked questions

Should I size down in shapewear for more compression?
No. Compression strength is built into the fabric at your measured size; a smaller size just rolls at the waistband, digs at the legs and pushes tissue past the garment's edges. Firmer fabric, not smaller size, is how you increase sculpting.
What size shapewear should I get if between sizes?
The larger one, in the compression level you want. A larger firm-compression piece shapes more comfortably and effectively than a smaller medium one.
Can I wear shapewear all day?
Light and medium levels, yes, if you can breathe deeply and sit comfortably. Firm sculpting pieces are built for hours, not days; numbness, dig marks or shallow breathing mean the level or size is wrong.
